MEASURE “V” IS NOT A NEW TAX
1.) What does this mean?
When people choose a community to live in, they consider factors like home values, commute times, schools, neighborhood appearance, and job availability. Measure V is not a new tax—it’s a continuation of the 1% sales tax that has been critical in funding essential services like public safety and road maintenance in Ridgecrest. By renewing Measure V, we can continue to address the key elements that make our community appealing to new residents and businesses.
2.) Have we made progress on this?
Yes, significant progress has been made thanks to Measure V, such as rehabilitating 72% of Ridgecrest’s roads and maintaining a strong police presence. However, there is still more to be done. Continuing Measure V will ensure that we can keep improving our infrastructure, maintaining public safety, and lifting Ridgecrest’s image as a thriving community of opportunity.
3.) Does this measure just give the city a blank check to do anything they want?
Absolutely NOT! Measure V is a continuation of a well-established funding mechanism with strong oversight. The Citizen Oversight Committee ensures that funds are spent responsibly. Additionally, the unique election system in Ridgecrest, where two city council seats and the Mayor’s seat are up for election every two years, provides ongoing accountability. Measure V is specifically designed to continue the essential funding for public safety and infrastructure without increasing taxes.
Combining Measure V and Measure P:
Measure V and Measure P together strategically protect local revenues from potential future infringements by Kern County, while simultaneously accomplishing community goals that safeguard our families, property, and the future of Ridgecrest.
